Overview
The Kano Model is a prioritization framework developed by Professor Noriaki Kano that categorizes features, tasks, or initiatives based on their impact on customer or user satisfaction. While originally created for product development, it's highly effective for personal time management and task prioritization.
The Five Categories
1. Basic Needs (Must-Haves)
- Expected features/tasks
- Absence causes dissatisfaction
- Presence doesn't increase satisfaction
- Time Management: Non-negotiable responsibilities (paying bills, meeting deadlines)
- Linear satisfaction relationship
- More = better
- Absence causes dissatisfaction
- Time Management: Quality work, skill improvement, relationship maintenance
3. Excitement Needs (Delighters)
- Unexpected features that delight
- Absence doesn't cause dissatisfaction
- Presence creates high satisfaction
- Time Management: Innovation, creative projects, going above and beyond
4. Indifferent
- No impact on satisfaction either way
- Time Management: Busy work, low-value tasks to eliminate
5. Reverse
- Presence causes dissatisfaction
- Time Management: Time wasters, bad habits, unnecessary meetings

Prioritization Process
- List all tasks/activities
- Categorize each using Kano framework
- Allocate time accordingly:
- Basic: Minimum time to meet standards
- Performance: Bulk of focused time
- Excitement: Discretionary time when basics covered
- Indifferent: Minimize/eliminate
- Reverse: Eliminate entirely
